Near Protocol's native asset experienced a notable decline on Tuesday, dropping by roughly 7% even though the community voted to approve a major governance change concerning the near token. The digital asset traded at $3.82 during morning hours, pushing its weekly decline to approximately 13% according to tracking data from CoinMarketCap.
The recent downward price movement arrived on the heels of Monday's successful passing of HSP-029. This governance initiative achieved overwhelming backing, securing support from 99.9% of participating voting power. Statistics from the governance platform indicated that about 3.28 million vote-escrowed tokens were cast in favor of the measure.
The approved change aims to decrease annual token issuance from 2.5% to 1.6% over 24 months.
Understanding the Near Tokenomics Shift
The approved modifications are structured to diminish long-term dilution for holders while simultaneously lowering projected gross staking yields. Under the new parameters, staking yields are expected to contract from 5.2% down to 3.3% by the conclusion of the 24-month implementation timeline. Projections indicate the shift will prevent 11.8 million tokens from entering active circulation within the first two years, extending to a reduction of 66.1 million units across a six-year horizon.
Despite the positive reception from voters, the protocol update is not yet finalized. It remains subject to a 14-day veto window overseen by the Security Council. Should it bypass a veto, the measures will proceed toward ratification alongside a 90-day grace period before issuance cuts officially initiate. Furthermore, successful deployment relies upon network validators adopting the mandatory technical upgrades.
Why it matters
The planned reduction in token generation directly impacts circulating supply dynamics and staking returns for network participants. By preventing millions of tokens from entering circulation, the protocol alters its long-term economic model and projected yields for validators and delegators alike.
