Novaya Gazeta has announced its permanent closure, blaming state repression and accusing authorities of killing the publication.

Novaya Gazeta, one of Russia's most prominent independent news organisations, has announced it is shutting down its operations entirely. In a statement published on its website, the media outlet accused state authorities and special services of orchestrating its demise, declaring that the publication is no more.

The outlet received an eviction notice while simultaneously losing the donation system that permitted readers to fund its work. Over its three decades of existence, the media organisation built a reputation for fearless investigative reporting covering high-level corruption, human rights abuses, and bureaucratic overreach.

Novaya Gazeta has announced its complete closure after facing severe state pressure and losing its operational capabilities.

The publication noted that six journalists linked to its work were previously killed for performing their professional duties, including Anna Politkovskaya, who covered the Chechen wars and was shot dead twenty years ago. The closure statement described the event as a coordinated act by a repressive state apparatus where individual convictions are treated as state treason.

Pressure on independent reporting intensified following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Authorities previously revoked the organisation's publishing licence, blocked access to its website, and designated several staff members as foreign agents. Earlier this year, police searched the newsroom and detained investigative journalist Oleg Roldugin, while editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov also faced police questioning and a home search.

Despite these mounting obstacles, staff continued publishing by utilizing virtual private networks. Dmitry Muratov, a co-founder and long-serving chief editor who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021, was subsequently declared a foreign agent by the state in 2023.

Why it matters

The closure of Novaya Gazeta marks the end of a major pillar of independent journalism in Russia, removing one of the few remaining platforms for investigative reporting on government accountability. This development highlights the shrinking space for independent media and free expression under increasing state restrictions.
