Primark Brings Forward UK Home Deliveries Plan After Profits Slide

Primark accelerates its home delivery rollout by two years, planning a UK launch by late 2027 following a drop in annual profits.

Fashion retailer Primark is accelerating its entry into digital retail, announcing plans to begin home deliveries in the UK by December of next year. The move follows a decline in annual profits and comes as the company seeks to attract shoppers who typically live too far from physical branches or prefer shopping online. George Weston, the chief executive of the fashion chain's parent group Associated British Foods, confirmed that the timeline for the delivery service has been moved forward by approximately two years.

The acceleration was made possible by acquiring a robot-assisted warehouse in Sheffield from Debenhams. Primark will take over this facility by the middle of next year and is currently preparing suppliers to handle individual customer shipments alongside standard bulk store orders. While the brand has operated a click-and-collect service in the UK since 2022, home delivery represents a major shift in strategy for a business that previously argued online fashion sales could not generate sufficient returns.

Executives noted that changing industry economics, including delivery and return fees that offset logistical costs, made the project viable. Research conducted by the group indicated that digital channels would attract net-new consumers rather than merely cannibalize existing in-store sales. The retailer currently maintains 511 locations across 21 countries and faces intensifying competition from digital-first low-cost competitors, supermarkets, and international fashion brands.

Primark will launch UK home deliveries by late next year after acquiring a robot-assisted warehouse.

Financial results for the twelve months leading to September showed total revenues rising by 4% to reach £9.8 billion, driven primarily by new retail openings. However, established locations experienced sluggish performance or declines, with existing UK stores up just 0.5%, European operations down 4.7%, and US locations dropping 2.6% as consumers tightened spending. Investments in pricing reductions, marketing campaigns, and range improvements contributed to a 10% decrease in annual profits to £1 billion.

In addition to the retail expansion, Associated British Foods intends to separate Primark from its established food and sugar operations through a corporate spin-off scheduled for December 2027. The division will then operate independently from consumer brands such as Twinings and Jordans.

Why it matters

This strategic shift transforms Primark from a strictly brick-and-mortar discounter into a multichannel competitor capable of reaching audiences beyond the immediate vicinity of its physical storefronts. The decision alters the competitive landscape for budget apparel in the UK and signals a broader recalibration of retail logistics to counter digital-first rivals.
