Hundreds gathered in County Down to pay final respects to Irish Olympian Ciara Mageean, who passed away following a battle with cancer.

Hundreds of mourners gathered on Tuesday to pay their final respects at the funeral of Irish Olympian Ciara Mageean in Portaferry, County Down. The former European champion and two-time Olympic runner passed away on Sunday following a diagnosis of stage four bowel cancer, coming less than three weeks after her marriage to her long-term partner Thomas Moran. Family, friends, and members of the public followed the funeral cortege from the athlete's family home to St Patrick's Church for the requiem Mass.

Prominent figures from politics and sport attended the service, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, fellow Olympian Rhys McClenaghan, and 1972 gold medallist Lady Mary Peters. Representatives for the Irish President and government, along with political and sporting leaders, were also present. Portaferry GAC and Mageean's former school, Assumption Grammar in Ballynahinch, formed a guard of honour for the funeral procession.

The service featured tributes highlighting her remarkable athletic achievements, which included representing Ireland at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics and winning gold in the 1500m at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome. She also claimed silver for Northern Ireland at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. A Mass booklet displayed the iconic moment she crossed the finish line at the European Championships.

The passing of the inspirational Irish Olympian has led to widespread tributes from her hometown and the sporting community.

Remembering an Inspirational Life

In his homily, Fr Martin Kelly recalled his childhood connection with the athlete and shared memories of visiting her in hospice care shortly before her death. Despite her severe illness, Mageean demonstrated her caring nature by offering to link arms with him as he struggled during a visit. Mourners heard moving reflections on the joy and pride she brought to her hometown and her dedication to sport throughout her life.

Why it matters

The passing of a prominent athlete following a diagnosis of stage four bowel cancer brings renewed attention to health awareness and early detection. Medical guidelines emphasize that recognizing symptoms such as blood in stool, changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, or persistent abdominal discomfort should prompt individuals to seek professional medical advice immediately, as early detection significantly aids treatment outcomes.
