Unseen Archive Offers Rare Glimpse Into Rabindranath Tagore

An extraordinary collection of historical materials regarding rabindranath tagore is being exhibited publicly for the first time in Mumbai. The private family archive sheds light on the final years of the celebrated polymath, featuring artworks, manuscripts, personal letters, and vintage photographs. The items stem from the author's visits between 1938 and 1940 to the Darjeeling village home of his protege, Maitreyi Devi.

Among the highlights on display is a 1940 manuscript that appears to be an early draft of Tagore's memoir, Chelebela. Exhibition curator Nishad Avari noted that the document echoes the open educational philosophy that inspired the author to establish his experimental school, Santiniketan. The collection also includes intimate personal effects, such as a kurta and lungi left behind at the family residence, along with rare portraits and landscape sketches created during his retreats in Mungpoo.

A rare family archive reveals intimate details of Rabindranath Tagore in his final years.

Institutional holdings at Visva-Bharati and the National Gallery of Modern Art contain much of the existing archival material, making the emergence of this private collection exceptionally noteworthy. The exhibition provides historians, scholars, and admirers with fresh perspectives on the man behind the global literary legacy.
