Matches in the Saudi Pro League have been delayed after the AFC Asian Cup 2027 was rescheduled following recent security incidents.

Upcoming matches in the Saudi Pro League have been postponed following the rescheduling of the AFC Asian Cup 2027, according to league organizers. The Saudi Pro League announced on Tuesday that fixtures scheduled for the coming week would not proceed as originally planned, arriving just two days before the start of the match week.

Organizers stated that the decision forms part of a wider review of the 2026-27 league fixture schedule. The revised continental tournament dates have reportedly created additional flexibility within the domestic football calendar. New dates for matchweek 13 will be announced once the ongoing schedule review concludes.

Saudi Pro League matches have been postponed following the rescheduling of the AFC Asian Cup 2027.

The postponement of the Asian Cup until December next year was announced earlier in the day following recent attacks on the kingdom. The 24-team continental tournament was originally scheduled to take place from January 7 to February 5. Asian football’s governing body made the decision after extensive discussions and close consultation with the Local Organising Committee of the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation. The tournament will now run from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028.

Last month, an attack on Riyadh’s international airport killed at least 13 people and wounded more than 300, marking the deadliest attack in Saudi Arabia in over a decade. Yemen’s Houthis claimed responsibility for the incident, while further attacks on the airport within a span of a week resulted in at least five more deaths.

## Recent Schedule Disruptions

The Saudi Pro League has already rescheduled several domestic league games this season for logistical reasons. Last month, an AFC Champions League Elite clash in Riyadh between hosts Al-Nassr and Emirati side Al Wasl was postponed due to a threat of missile attacks. Kickoff for that match was delayed after Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defence issued a safety warning 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.

Why it matters

The postponement of domestic league matches alters the immediate competitive schedule for clubs participating in the Saudi Pro League. The adjustment provides organizers with calendar flexibility following the rescheduling of the AFC Asian Cup 2027, affecting team preparation, fixture sequencing, and the broader domestic football calendar.
