Former Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the UK and European nations must strengthen ties because the US is no longer a fully reliable partner.
The United Kingdom and other European countries need to draw closer together as the United States transitions into a less dependable ally, former Prime Minister Keir Starmer has warned during his first major political intervention since stepping down from office. Speaking at the British Irish Chamber of Commerce, Starmer highlighted ongoing threats from Russia and asserted that the transformation in dealings with Washington during Donald Trump’s presidency will likely persist even after he leaves the Oval Office. He cautioned that European leadership has already been caught off guard twice by these shifting geopolitical realities.
“A stronger Europe is vital and the UK must be at the heart of it,” Starmer stated to the audience, noting that Europe failed to anticipate predictable events regarding defense and security vulnerabilities. He previously advocated for closer European connections before leaving office in July, emphasizing that Brexit caused considerable damage to the British economy and expressing a desire for deeper economic and security cooperation.

Starmer's remarks followed meetings in Dublin with prominent business figures and politicians, including Taoiseach Micheál Martin. The former prime minister stressed that these adjustments represent a permanent change rather than a temporary deviation under the current US administration, though he affirmed that military and intelligence alliances with America remain robust. This perspective aligns with a broader political consensus in the UK, as successors like Andy Burnham signal intentions to pursue bolder arrangements with the European Union concerning energy, food standards, and youth mobility.
The UK and European nations must forge closer ties as the United States becomes a less-reliable partner.
To address these challenges, Starmer called for enhanced pan-European cooperation and coordination on defense and security, advocating for a common security framework alongside a common market. He underscored that Britain must play a central role in this project as a nuclear power, leading NATO member, and contributor to European stability alongside allies like Ireland.
Why it matters
This shift in perspective signals a potential permanent realignment in British foreign and economic policy, affecting how the UK coordinates defense, security, and trade with European neighbors. As leaders prepare for upcoming summits, these developments could reshape future international agreements and European stability.
