Steve Ellis, best known as the charismatic lead singer of the 1960s pop-rock outfit Love Affair, has died at the age of 76. Online updates from those close to him confirmed that he passed away peacefully on October 30 due to complications arising from a chronic illness.
Born in northwest London's Edgware district in 1950, Ellis began his musical journey at age 15 by forming the Soul Survivors. Inspired by legendary American rhythm and blues performers like James Brown, he incorporated dynamic stage movements into his performances. The ensemble transitioned into Love Affair during the mid-sixties and secured a recording contract with Decca Records. While their initial single did not chart, their subsequent release propelled them to massive fame.
Working construction shifts by day, Ellis recorded vocals for Everlasting Love, a track originally brought to life by American artist Robert Knight. The energetic cover reached the top of the UK charts in 1968 and remained there for two consecutive weeks. Driven by powerful orchestral arrangements, the group achieved three additional Top 10 hits over the following two years, including Rainbow Valley and Bringing on Back the Good Times.
Career Shifts and Collaborations
Disillusioned as musical trends shifted toward progressive rock and overwhelmed by screaming fans, Ellis eventually departed from the group. He later fronted other musical projects such as Ellis and Widowmaker during the 1970s and pursued a solo career with albums like The Last Angry Man. In later decades, he forged a creative partnership with Paul Weller, collaborating on multiple albums including his final release, Baby Faced Assassin. Weller shared tributes online following the news, bidding a fond farewell to his longtime musical collaborator.
