Taika Waititi Blasts Critics Following Klara and the Sun Box-Office Failure

Filmmaker Taika Waititi recently shared sharp remarks directed at film reviewers after the commercial failure of his latest project, Klara and the Sun. Based on a novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, the movie struggled significantly during its initial weekend in North American cinemas. In a social media post, the director expressed harsh opinions about professional critics, describing them as out of touch while contrasting their views with much higher audience ratings found on review aggregator platforms.

The feature film carried a reported production budget of $44m and managed a gross of just $701,000 during its opening weekend across North American theatres. This performance placed the movie far behind competing theatrical releases, while subsequent weekend box office numbers showed a steep drop of 79 percent. Comparable results were recorded in the United Kingdom market during the opening run.

Director Taika Waititi blamed obsolete reviewer notices for the dismal box-office performance of his new film.

Numerous prominent publications published highly negative reviews for the adaptation. Media critics characterized the production unfavorably, pointing to weak pacing and ineffective artistic choices. In contrast, general viewers provided much stronger approval ratings on review platforms, reflecting a clear divide between professional evaluators and regular audiences.

Why it matters

The stark contrast between professional reviews and audience reception highlights ongoing discussions regarding the influence of critics on commercial film performance. This situation affects how studios evaluate box-office potential and how creators respond to public versus professional feedback.
