Susie Wiles leaves her role as White House chief of staff in a major administration shake-up that leaves leadership overwhelmingly male.

Donald Trump announced on Friday that Susie Wiles, the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff, will leave her post. The departure marks a major shake-up of the president's inner circle following a steady exodus of senior female officials from the administration. The announcement on Truth Social came just days after a sweeping blue wave handed Democrats control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections, leaving behind an overwhelmingly male leadership team.

Addressing reporters on Friday, the president stated that he wanted to make a change, noting that Wiles had done a very good job while adding that Stephen Miller has been great and that moves had to be made. Wiles, who reportedly handed in her resignation on Thursday night, described her tenure as the honor of a lifetime. She expressed pride in accomplishments such as border security, tax cuts, economic strengthening, and putting America first. Her designated replacement is immigration hardliner Stephen Miller.

Wiles previously faced health challenges related to susie wiles illness after being diagnosed with breast cancer, though she announced in September that she was cancer-free. Her exit follows a string of high-profile departures of women in the administration, including former White House press secretary Katie Zacharia, former homeland security secretary Kristi Noem, and former attorney general Pam Bondi. Additionally, former national intelligence director Tulsi Gabbard reportedly resigned under pressure, and former US ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle has also departed.

Just a day prior to the announcement regarding Wiles, Harmeet Dhillon resigned from her position as head of the justice departmentโ€™s civil rights division. Dhillon's departure arrived amid expectations that Democrats will utilize their congressional majority to investigate federal agencies, including the justice department. Other department personnel, such as assistant attorney general for national security John Eisenberg and key inquiry attorney Jason Reding Quiรฑones, have also resigned during the post-midterm personnel overhaul. Only a few women now remain in cabinet-level positions, including agriculture secretary Brooke Rollins and Small Business Administration head Kelly Loeffler.

Why it matters

The departure of Susie Wiles and multiple other high-ranking female officials alters the gender balance of the administration's leadership team, leaving it predominantly male. This transition occurs alongside ongoing personnel changes across federal agencies as the administration navigates a shift in congressional control following the midterm elections.
