Jason Reding Quinones is the latest high-level official to exit the Department of Justice following the recent Democratic victory in the midterm elections.
Jason Reding Quinones, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, has resigned from his position, according to Attorney General Todd Blanche. His departure follows the recent Democratic success in the midterm elections, as the administration prepares for potential oversight from the incoming Congress. Quinones was a prominent figure among Trump-backed officials within the Department of Justice, having led an expansive federal probe into allegations of Russian support for the 2016 presidential campaign.
The scope of the Trump-backed investigation
While a special investigator eventually concluded that no direct collusion occurred between the campaign and Russia, the former president frequently characterized the inquiry as a politically motivated witch-hunt. The investigation involved subpoenas for high-profile former officials, including former CIA director John Brennan, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and former FBI Director James Comey. Although these individuals were subpoenaed, no formal charges were brought against them in that specific matter. Comey has faced separate legal challenges, including a dismissed case and ongoing allegations regarding the handling of classified information.
Beyond the Russia-related probe, Quinones oversaw the indictment of 94-year-old Cuban revolutionary Raul Castro as part of a broader administration strategy against the nation. Attorney General Blanche expressed gratitude for Quinones' service, noting his work in addressing violent crime, drug trafficking, and transnational issues.
Several high-level Department of Justice officials have resigned as Democrats prepare for new congressional oversight.
A broader exodus at the Justice Department
Quinones is not the only senior official to vacate his post. Harmeet Dhillon, who led the DOJโs civil rights division, resigned one day prior. Dhillon had faced significant criticism for her management of the division and her reported instructions to staff to avoid investigating the deaths of two individuals killed by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis. Additionally, John Eisenberg, the assistant attorney general for the national security division, also submitted his resignation on Friday. Attorney General Blanche praised Eisenberg for his efforts in strengthening national security against foreign and domestic threats.
Why it matters
This wave of resignations occurs as the administration braces for a series of new congressional investigations. Following the Democratic party's victory in the midterm elections, the party has secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This shift grants them significant investigative and subpoena powers, with many expected probes likely to focus on allegations that the Justice Department became overly politicized during the previous administration.
