UK food supply chain affected by European freezer cyber attacks

The UK's cyber chief confirmed that vulnerable refrigeration technology has been exploited following a wave of supermarket freezer hacks across Europe.

The National Cyber Security Centre has confirmed it is aware of a couple of instances where vulnerable technology was exploited in the UK, following a wave of cyber attacks targeting European food supply chains. Supermarkets and food suppliers in countries including Ireland, Sweden, Estonia, and Belgium reported that their refrigeration systems had been manipulated, with temperatures hiked overnight.

Dr Richard Horne, chief executive of the National Cyber Security Centre, stated that the agency worked through the night to alert a handful of affected organisations in the UK and address potential impacts. These incidents follow similar cyber attacks in France during early October, which targeted hundreds of stores and spoiled fresh and frozen goods estimated to be worth millions of euros.

Vulnerable technology in the food supply sector

The European attacks exploited vulnerabilities in systems used to remotely control and manage cold refrigeration units. Security researchers had surfaced these specific weaknesses months prior to the incidents. According to the cyber chief, it remains too early to determine who is responsible for the ongoing hacks.

However, Dr Horne emphasised that the situation highlights an urgent need for businesses to ensure that the technology underpinning daily applications is secure and properly updated. He noted that the societal technology base has not received sufficient investment, with many firms operating systems past their end of life without proper upgrades or internet isolation.

While such outdated setups present low-hanging fruit for hackers, officials warn that adversaries are now exploiting these gaps even faster using artificial intelligence. The National Cyber Security Centre urged all organisations to invest in technological renewal and carefully evaluate the systems they rely upon.

Why it matters

The recent disruption to refrigeration systems highlights widespread vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure used by supermarkets and food suppliers. With multiple European nations affected and impacts noted in the UK, the incidents demonstrate how easily remote management technology can be targeted when companies fail to update or properly secure their digital systems.

This situation affects commercial operations, retail food availability, and business security standards across the affected regions. It serves as a warning for organisations globally to audit their digital dependencies and invest in robust technological safeguards.
