The White House has rejected reports that Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are stepping down following Republican midterm losses.
The White House has firmly dismissed rumors suggesting that Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio might vacate their positions following significant Republican defeats in the midterm elections. US media outlets previously reported calls for Hegseth to be replaced, linking his oversight of the ongoing conflict with Iran to the heavy losses suffered by the party, which resulted in Democrats gaining full control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
President Donald Trump and Vice-President JD Vance have both publicly addressed the election outcome, with Vance attributing the electoral setbacks directly to the Iran war. Despite receiving calls regarding Hegseth, Trump maintained during a recent telephone interview that he has every intention of keeping the defense secretary. Later at the White House, Trump praised Hegseth's performance, highlighting achievements such as the January arrest of Venezuelan leader Nicolรกs Maduro and the military campaign in its ninth month.
The White House dismissed rumors of departures for key cabinet members following recent electoral setbacks.
White House stance on cabinet future
Meanwhile, a departing congressional Republican has threatened to initiate an impeachment vote against Hegseth as early as next week. In response, Hegseth released a video defending his record, denouncing the impeachment effort as political theater from a defeated lawmaker and asserting that his department has successfully advanced the administration's agenda. Additional reports indicate that top military leadership, including Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Dan Caine and Centcom chief Admiral Brad Cooper, may also face scrutiny regarding their guidance on the war.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has similarly refuted speculation regarding his departure ahead of a potential presidential run in 2028. Rubio confirmed in an interview that completing his term has always been his plan and expressed enjoyment in his current responsibilities. Both the White House and the State Department categorized the reports about Rubio as inaccurate.
Why it matters
The developments highlight internal political friction within the administration following electoral defeats that shifted legislative control in Washington. The stability of key national security leadership positions affects defense policy direction and diplomatic strategies at a time when ongoing military engagements continue to draw intense scrutiny from lawmakers.
