A severe technology stock sell-off that began overnight on Wall Street continued to impact Asian tech stocks during regional trading sessions. Market authorities in South Korea temporarily halted trading as prices dropped sharply across the region following a steep decline in the US Nasdaq index. The downturn was fueled by investor anxiety that political shifts in the United States could lead to stricter regulatory scrutiny regarding artificial intelligence development and slow down the nationwide expansion of data centres.
Japanโs Nikkei index fell 6 percent, marking its largest single-session decline since April 2025. Meanwhile, major indices in South Korea and Taiwan dropped over 8 percent at the opening bell before trimming some losses as financial regulators stepped in. Wall Street experienced a surge in volatility while the tech-heavy Nasdaq sank 5.5 percent, erasing trillions of dollars from S&P 500 firms amid concerns that political developments might hinder the ongoing artificial intelligence boom.
Global tech markets faced severe pressure as fears over artificial intelligence regulations and data centre expansion sparked a massive sell-off.
Market analysts noted that political jitters compounded existing concerns regarding the financial returns on massive infrastructure investments. Dong Baozhen, chairman of asset manager Lingtong Shengtai, told Reuters that the sell-off demonstrated how artificial intelligence stock valuations had relied on overly optimistic expectations of the future. By the close of trading, Asian markets had recovered some ground due to swift interventions by regional authorities.
South Korean authorities worked to stabilize the financial sector as Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il eased regulations on leveraged investments by retail traders. In China, state entities intervened by purchasing equities to support market stability. Taiwanโs stock market closed down 4.5 percent, registering a significant weekly decline, while the island's economy ministry emphasized that long-term global demand for advanced technologies like cloud services and artificial intelligence remains robust. Key semiconductor manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, TSMC, Kioxia, and SoftBank Group all experienced substantial declines before recovering from their lowest points.
Why it matters
The market turbulence highlights how vulnerable current artificial intelligence valuations are to regulatory shifts and community opposition regarding infrastructure costs. Experts suggest that clearer oversight on data centre construction could ultimately encourage a more sustainable pace of development within the global technology sector.
