Crypto exchange Binance has disclosed that hackers manipulated internal artificial intelligence tools to compromise key developers prior to a massive security breach. According to the company's recent security report, attackers utilized a compromised employee machine alongside an internal AI assistant to seize control of two wallet infrastructure engineers. This unauthorized access enabled intruders to obtain a container deployment permission token, ultimately penetrating wallet-signing operations and facilitating unauthorized transactions across multiple blockchain networks.

Investigations showed that the attackers did not rely on an autonomous AI model to execute the crime, but rather weaponized an internal tool as part of a sophisticated campaign involving stolen credentials, malicious software installers, and social engineering. Earlier incidents included an engineer downloading a tampered software installer for an AI coding utility, and another falling victim to a fraudulent recruitment process featuring staged interviews and malicious assignments. The Federal Bureau of Investigation attributed this broader campaign to North Korean threat actors targeting cryptocurrency platforms and developers.

Cybersecurity researchers from Google and Anthropic have previously warned that artificial intelligence is increasingly being integrated into threat operations for reconnaissance and automated credential harvesting. In response to the breach, Binance has rebuilt its affected wallet infrastructure and internal AI tools, replaced compromised devices, and launched an independent cybersecurity review. The exchange reported that a significant portion of the affected digital assets has been frozen, intercepted, or replenished.

Why it matters

This incident highlights the growing risks associated with integrating artificial intelligence into developer environments across the global technology and cryptocurrency sectors. As attackers increasingly target automated systems and software supply chains, firms must drastically improve behavioral anomaly monitoring and endpoint security to protect digital assets.
