Binance hacked in record $6.3bn security breach as FBI blames North Korea
Cryptocurrency exchange Binance says it has replaced 90 percent of funds stolen in a record $6.3bn hack attributed by the FBI to North Korea.
Cryptocurrency exchange Binance reported that it has successfully replaced 90 percent of the virtual assets stolen during a massive security breach, as fresh developments emerged regarding the massive binance hack news. The platform stated that the remaining 10 percent of tokens consist of less liquid assets, which will require additional time to acquire. Co-CEO Richard Teng assured users that the enterprise remains fully dedicated to covering the remaining deficit, emphasizing that account holders will not absorb any financial losses resulting from the incident.
The breach, which resulted in the theft of more than $6 billion in virtual assets on or around October 29, 2026, prompted the platform to temporarily suspend user withdrawals. According to recent announcements, regular withdrawal services are anticipated to resume on Sunday. Teng noted that the intrusion involved a sophisticated attack method utilizing a compromised laptop and malicious software engineered to erase operational traces, complicating subsequent investigations.
FBI confirms North Korea involvement
The Federal Bureau of Investigation officially stated that a state-sponsored collective known as TraderTraitor was responsible for the enormous theft. Investigators observed these actors converting illicitly obtained assets into Ethereum, with expectations that the funds would undergo further laundering through decentralized finance networks and instant swap protocols. Law enforcement agencies have strongly advised private sector entities to block transactions connected to the digital addresses utilized by the TraderTraitor group.
TraderTraitor is understood to operate as a component of the Lazarus Group. The scale of the event has intensified existing discussions surrounding the vulnerability of cryptographic frameworks and digital security infrastructure, particularly amid concerns regarding advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. Financial markets reacted swiftly to the disclosure, with Bitcoin falling nearly 5 percent, Ethereum dropping nearly 6 percent, and Binance's native token tumbling nearly 10 percent.
Binance replaced 90 percent of the stolen funds and expects to resume user withdrawals on Sunday.
To manage the financial fallout, the company allocated approximately $6.34bn from its corporate reserves, the Secure Asset Fund for Users, and its Futures Insurance Fund to repurchase the necessary tokens. This incident highlights the ongoing capacity of North Korea, which remains heavily sanctioned for its nuclear and missile ambitions, to secure alternative revenue streams.
Why it matters
The unprecedented scale of the security breach underscores critical vulnerabilities within major cryptocurrency exchanges and digital asset management. By covering the losses through internal reserves, the platform aims to maintain user trust and prevent a broader systemic panic across digital finance markets.
