Cryptocurrency exchange Binance is undergoing a major executive transition, with finance chief Kaiser Ng preparing to leave the firm to launch a new venture. The handover involving Binance Kaiser Ng comes after a structured succession process that was arranged across the preceding six months, according to a statement from Binance co-CEO Yi He obtained by Reuters on Saturday, following Ng's tenure of more than five years with the organisation.
Ng will be succeeded by Justin Yek, who previously served as vice-president of finance at cross-border payments company Airwallex. Ng had served as Binance's chief financial officer since January 2022, according to his LinkedIn profile, having previously occupied the CFO role at rival exchange Kraken for roughly five years prior to joining Binance.
Justin Yek replaces departing CFO Kaiser Ng following a six-month transition plan at Binance.
Binance hack news and leadership handover
The leadership change comes in the wake of an unprecedented cybersecurity breach at the exchange. Hackers took approximately $6.3 billion from Binance on Oct. 29, according to Cointelegraph, marking the largest theft of cryptocurrency ever recorded. Binance announced that it would absorb the entire financial loss directly rather than imposing any haircut or costs on its customer base.
The intrusion has been linked by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and several independent security researchers to North Korean cyber operators. North Korea has formally denied the accusations. The breach coincides with wider industry scrutiny across the sector, where Asian exchanges have been forced to reinforce infrastructure against intensifying security incidents.
Why it matters
The appointment puts Justin Yek at the helm of Binance's financial operations during an extraordinary period of balance-sheet management. Absorbing a $6.3 billion shortfall tests corporate reserves, making the chief financial officer's role pivotal in maintaining operational liquidity, regulatory standing, and internal fiscal governance.
For traders and industry observers globally, the seamless handover signals how Binance intends to maintain managerial continuity amid substantial operational pressure, assuring account holders that executive turnover will not interrupt the company's commitment to protecting user assets.
