Air defences in Saudi Arabia successfully destroyed several ballistic and cruise missiles directed towards Riyadh and the Eastern province by the Houthis.
Air defences in Saudi Arabia successfully destroyed three ballistic missiles launched by the Houthi movement towards the kingdom, according to the military coalition fighting the armed group. Major-General Turki al-Maliki, the coalition spokesperson, stated that two of those projectiles were directed at the capital, Riyadh. Later updates from the alliance confirmed the interception and destruction of two additional cruise missiles aimed at Riyadh and the southern region. Al-Maliki also verified an earlier interception involving a ballistic missile fired towards the kingdom's Eastern province.
These defensive actions unfold as ground combat escalates across Yemen between the Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, and government forces. Yemeni forces initiated an offensive operation last month to reclaim territory controlled by the armed group, including the capital city of Sanaa. Meanwhile, Houthi-run health officials reported numerous civilian casualties resulting from coalition air strikes in a village near Sanaa, though the coalition provided no immediate comment on those specific reports, and independent verification remains unavailable.
Saudi Arabia security developments
Military spokespersons for the Houthis claimed that numerous air strikes targeted Sanaa and multiple other governorates over a recent twenty-four-hour period. In response, the group asserted responsibility for multiple operations involving aerial and ballistic assets directed at oil infrastructure, an airport, and military installations on both sides of the border. This escalation follows earlier deadly incidents, including a market attack in Taiz province where conflicting blame was placed on both coalition air strikes and Houthi ballistic fire.

Tensions have risen significantly since a previous ceasefire collapsed in July following a Houthi blockade of Saudi ports. The United Nations reports that thousands have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced since the breakdown of the truce, compounded by recent offensives involving the seizure of Red Sea coastal areas and subsequent government counter-campaigns.
Why it matters
The recent escalation in cross-border missile launches and defensive interceptions highlights the deepening instability in the region, affecting civilian populations and vital infrastructure. For readers tracking global developments, the intensification of the conflict demonstrates the ongoing vulnerability of key urban and industrial centers in the kingdom.
