Recent market data reveals a significant shift in sentiment for digital assets, as short-term holders increasingly move from profit-taking to accepting losses. According to an analysis by the on-chain firm Glassnode, the proportion of tokens seeing profitable spending among short-term holders fell to approximately 12% by the end of October. This represents a sharp decline from the roughly 80% observed in late September, a period that was characterized by a rotation into altcoins.
Glassnode utilizes the short-term-holder spent output profit ratio, or STH-SOPR, to evaluate whether investors are selling their holdings at a gain or a loss. A reading above 1 indicates that assets are being spent at a profit, while a figure below 1 suggests that sellers are accepting prices lower than their acquisition costs. By the end of October, the firm noted that typical tracked tokens were being sold at a small loss.
Understanding the Altcoin Season Index
While Glassnode tracks spending behavior across more than 300 tokens, other metrics provide insight into broader market participation. The BlockchainCenter Altcoin Season Index, which measures the performance of the top 50 eligible coins against Bitcoin over a 90-day window, stood at 41 as of November 4. For a period to be classified as an altcoin season, at least 75% of the tracked universe must outperform Bitcoin. With a reading of 41, the market remains within a neutral band, indicating that fewer than half of these major coins have outperformed Bitcoin over the recent three-month period.
Short-term altcoin holders are increasingly selling at a loss as market breadth remains neutral.
It is important to note that these two metrics track different aspects of the market. A token may appreciate in dollar value while still trailing Bitcoin if the latter rises at a faster rate. Furthermore, loss-making spending by recent holders can coexist with stronger relative returns over longer timeframes. Because these indicators do not measure direct buying pressure, they do not definitively establish the presence of fresh demand.
Analysts suggest that a more convincing recovery would require sustained improvement in spending profitability alongside a broader group of altcoins consistently outperforming Bitcoin. Such a development would demonstrate that buyers are successfully absorbing selling pressure, addressing the current uncertainty regarding market leadership.
Why it matters
The current data highlights a disconnect between short-term holder profitability and broader market momentum. For investors and market participants, this suggests that the altcoin market is currently in a state of consolidation rather than a confirmed breakout. The lack of widespread profitable spending and neutral relative breadth means that the case for a sustained altcoin recovery remains unproven, leaving the market to await further evidence of buyer participation.
