Bitcoin and gold prices have climbed following US election results, though analysts suggest recent market activity may be driven by short liquidations rather than a fundamental shift.

The recent rally in the Bitcoin and gold price has sparked renewed discussion regarding the so-called debasement trade, a strategy where investors acquire scarce assets to hedge against currency depreciation and rising government debt. Following the US midterm elections, Bitcoin rebounded from approximately $75,600 on November 4 to surpass $81,000. Simultaneously, gold futures experienced a 3.4% increase to $4,061.10, marking their largest daily gain in three months as the US dollar softened.

While some observers view this as a flight to safety, broader financial markets presented a more nuanced picture. The S&P 500 rose by 1.6% and the Dow gained 3%, while Treasury yields declined. Investors appear to be responding to reduced political uncertainty and the potential for a divided government to constrain federal spending. According to James Butterfill, head of research at CoinShares, Bitcoin had likely already priced in much of the election outcome, allowing for a recovery once political ambiguity faded.

Understanding the Bitcoin gold price correlation

Institutional interest in the relationship between these assets has grown. Grayscale reported that Bitcoinโ€™s 90-day correlation with gold climbed above 0.50 in August, while its correlation with the Nasdaq-100 fell to approximately 0.33. Bitwise noted that this connection is at its strongest level since 2020, a period defined by significant fiscal and monetary stimulus. These concerns are supported by Congressional Budget Office projections, which estimate that US federal debt could rise to 120% of GDP by 2036.

However, technical data suggests the recent price jump was heavily influenced by market mechanics. CoinGlass data indicates that $378 million in bearish positions were liquidated within an hour as prices rose, with 81% of those being short positions. Bitfinex analysts noted that recent recoveries have been driven primarily by short covering rather than aggressive spot market buying. Furthermore, while US spot Bitcoin ETFs saw a combined $74.6 million in inflows on November 4, this followed three sessions of heavy outflows totaling $1.16 billion.

Glassnode data highlights that only 38% of Bitcoin held by short-term investors is currently profitable, with an average cost basis for active participants near $77,700. While some analysts point to potential resistance near $85,500, others suggest that a decline below $73,000 could threaten the broader recovery trend.

The recent surge in Bitcoin and gold may be driven by short liquidations rather than fundamental investment shifts.

Why it matters

The simultaneous movement of Bitcoin and gold reflects shifting investor sentiment regarding US fiscal policy and the long-term stability of the dollar. For global investors, including those in South Asia, these trends highlight how political developments in the US can trigger rapid volatility in digital and traditional assets.

Understanding these dynamics is essential for market participants monitoring how government debt and bond yields influence speculative investments. As institutional correlation between crypto and precious metals grows, the market remains sensitive to both macroeconomic data and internal trading liquidations.
