The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports over 5,000 measles cases in the United States, reaching the highest total since 1991.

Official figures show that 5,182 confirmed measles cases have emerged across the United States in 2026. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates this count represents the highest level for the vaccine-preventable illness in 35 years. The current total more than doubles the 2,289 confirmed cases registered over the course of the previous year.

Nearly all infections stem from documented outbreaks, with 4,993 cases linked to specific transmission clusters. Public health officials note that the rising infection numbers coincide with a downward trend in childhood immunizations. Kindergarten vaccination coverage across the nation fell from 95.2 percent during the 2019-2020 school term down to 92.4 percent for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Children and teenagers account for almost 60 percent of all confirmed measles cases.

Younger populations bear the brunt of the current health situation. Individuals under the age of five comprise 18 percent of the total count, while school-aged children between five and nineteen represent 41 percent. Combined, children and teenagers make up approximately 59 percent of all confirmed infections.

Classification Disputes

The federal tally records four deaths resulting from measles this year. However, this national figure sits below local state reports, particularly in Pennsylvania, which has experienced the heaviest impact from the outbreak. The Pennsylvania Department of Health documented 1,487 cases and six deaths during the current period.

This discrepancy highlights a broader debate regarding how health agencies categorize fatalities. Pennsylvania applies a standard that classifies any death as measles-associated if a confirmed patient passes away within 30 days of showing symptoms, absent an unrelated cause. Officials removed two unvaccinated fatalities from the national database following questions from federal health leadership about causation, though infectious disease specialists emphasize that tracking associated deaths remains a longstanding global standard.

Why it matters

The widespread resurgence of a virus declared eliminated over two decades ago underscores vulnerabilities tied to gaps in healthcare access and vaccine hesitancy. With experts noting that declining local immunization rates can endanger populations globally, health protection remains a shared responsibility that directly impacts communities worldwide.
