Digital asset trading platforms have moved swiftly to reassure users following a security breach involving crypto binance hot wallet infrastructure last week. Several companies have publicly disclosed how they divide customer funds between offline cold storage and internet-connected hot wallets.
Gate introduced a new framework on Thursday, reporting that the majority of its holdings are kept offline. The platform claimed its offline reserves could cover a significant portion of client holdings even in a worst-case scenario where hot wallets were fully compromised. Meanwhile, Coinbase stated in a blog post that it maintains the vast majority of customer funds in offline storage and continuously rebalances excess amounts.
In South Korea, Upbit confirmed that its offline holdings significantly exceed regulatory minimums, maintaining a very high percentage in offline storage. Other major South Korean platforms also reported their respective offline percentages, while OKX reiterated its existing security structure. Analysts note that these reported figures may not be directly comparable due to differing calculation methods and reporting periods.
Offline storage ratios offer only partial security visibility as internal controls matter.
Industry observers emphasize that offline wallets do not eliminate all vulnerabilities. Systems can still face risks from compromised signing mechanisms, inadequate internal access controls, or employees authorizing fraudulent transfers. Regulatory bodies have previously cautioned that such weaknesses can impact both online and offline infrastructure alike.
Why it matters
This wave of disclosures provides greater visibility into how different trading platforms manage digital asset security. It highlights industry-wide efforts to rebuild user confidence following significant security incidents, affecting how customers evaluate platform safety measures globally.
