Delhi's air quality has slipped into the very poor category as winter approaches, with authorities enforcing pollution controls and court rules on firecrackers ahead of Diwali.
As the winter season begins, New Delhi is facing another round of severe air pollution that threatens the health of millions of residents. The city's Air Quality Index climbed past the threshold for the very poor category, driven by a mix of weather patterns, vehicular exhaust, industrial emissions and crop-residue burning in nearby states. This sharp decline follows an unusually clean October that had recorded the lowest average index for the month in eight years. On Wednesday morning, air quality readings in the capital registered at 377, placing the index firmly in the very poor bracket. The measurement accounts for eight major pollutants, focusing heavily on fine particulate matter known as PM2.5. These microscopic particles can bypass bodily defenses and travel deep into human lungs, posing severe health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. Prolonged exposure can trigger respiratory complications and aggravate existing medical conditions. ## Delhi Diwali Restrictions And Court Rulings With the festival of Diwali only days away, concerns are mounting that celebratory fireworks could push atmospheric pollutant levels even higher. In response to the worsening conditions, local authorities have activated Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan to limit dust, vehicular emissions and other contributing factors. The Supreme Court recently addressed the ongoing regulatory debate by permitting the manufacture, sale and use of certified green firecrackers for a limited duration during the festive weekend. These modified fireworks utilize chemical formulas designed to release fewer emissions and carry verified QR codes. However, enforcement remains a persistent obstacle, as conventional fireworks have previously been sold under the guise of green alternatives. Police have been directed to patrol sales locations and check certifications. > Delhi air quality drops into the very poor category as winter pollution and festive preparations intensify. ## Why It Matters The ongoing air quality crisis affects millions of residents across northern India, heightening health risks for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children. The situation also places regulatory and enforcement pressure on local authorities attempting to balance traditional festival celebrations with public health safeguards. Beyond the capital, other urban centers like Mumbai have also experienced elevated pollution readings, highlighting a broader regional challenge with seasonal air quality degradation.
