Associated Press projections show the Democratic Party has won back control of the United States Senate following the 2026 midterm elections.

The political landscape of the United States shifted late on Tuesday night when projections from the Associated Press news agency confirmed that the democratic party has secured enough victories to reclaim control of the upper chamber of the US Congress in the 2026 midterm elections. Democrats needed a net gain of four seats in the 100-member legislature to wrest the majority away from the Republicans, achieving at least 51 seats while several races remained uncalled.

In the outgoing 119th Congress, Republicans maintained a 53-seat majority compared to 45 seats and two independents for the Democrats. Flipping the Senate was initially viewed as a tougher challenge than taking the House of Representatives because of the smaller number of seats up for grabs. Senate terms last six years rather than the two-year terms served by House members, and staggered elections mean only about a third of seats face voters during any single cycle. The 2026 cycle featured 35 races, consisting of 33 regular contests and two special elections held in Ohio and Florida after Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio entered President Donald Trump's administration in 2025.

Several contests produced dramatic upsets across the country. In South Carolina, paediatrician Annie Andrews captured a seat previously held by Republican Darline Graham, marking the first time a Democrat won a Senate seat in the state since 1998. Former governor Roy Cooper flipped North Carolina by defeating Republican rival Michael Whatley. Meanwhile, in the traditionally red state of Texas, state legislator and seminary student James Talarico achieved an upset against state Attorney General Ken Paxton, representing the first statewide Democratic win there since 1994. Additional flips included Sherrod Brown defeating incumbent Republican Senator Jon Husted in Ohio, and Adam Hamilton, a megachurch pastor, winning in Kansas against sitting Senator Roger Marshall. Kansas last elected a Democratic senator in 1932.

Democrats secured at least 51 seats to take control of the Senate in the 2026 midterms.

Democrats also defended multiple vulnerable seats, including Jon Ossoff holding his position in Georgia and Mark Warner securing a fourth term representing Virginia. The final outcomes concluded a fiercely contested election cycle that featured at least seven major toss-up states.

Why it matters

The outcome effectively dismantles the Republican legislative "trifecta" established during the 2024 election, which gave the party control of the presidency, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. This shift in the upper chamber alters the balance of power in Washington, DC, directly impacting the federal legislative process and the confirmation of executive and judicial appointments for the remainder of the presidential term.
