An Ethereum developer speaking at a recent conference in Mumbai outlined a faster timeline for network security upgrades. During the event, an Ethereum researcher stated the community's ambition to achieve a complete post-quantum and post-AI network transition by December 2028, moving the target one year ahead of a previously established foundation schedule.

The updated schedule arrives after the foundation's September roadmap originally set December 2029 as the final deadline for protecting the execution, consensus, and data layers. The remarks delivered at Devcon 8 represent a more aggressive development pace, though they do not officially replace the existing schedule, which is subject to upcoming evaluations.

Ethereum Development Roadmap

Under the accelerated plan, network builders face a twenty-four-month window to implement three additional upgrades. Earlier in the year, the researcher detailed intentions to introduce leanVM technology prior to rolling out layer protections across the blockchain architecture.

Ethereum researcher targets December 2028 to achieve post-quantum and post-AI transition security.

The proposed speedup has attracted attention across the wider blockchain sector. Independent developers have already begun exploring alternative layer-1 network protections, with external voices previously describing the foundational twenty-nine target as insufficient.

Why it matters

This proposed timeline adjustment accelerates network security preparations against future quantum computing risks. The shift directly impacts developers and blockchain participants navigating the evolving technical roadmap.
