Liquid Restores 1:1 Bitcoin Backing, but Wallet Refills Remain Manual

Swap provider SideSwap reports full reserve backing for L-BTC, though customer payouts still depend on manual Bitcoin wallet replenishment.

The Liquid Network has fully restored the reserve backing for its Bitcoin-linked token, L-BTC, according to a recent update from swap provider SideSwap. The update noted that morning figures showed identical amounts of L-BTC in circulation and underlying Bitcoin managed by the Liquid Federation, achieving a one-to-one ratio. This recovery follows a September software flaw in the Elements platform that allowed unbacked tokens to enter circulation and convert through SideSwap.

While the full backing has been re-established, direct withdrawals from the Liquid Federation remain restricted. Consequently, customers wishing to convert L-BTC to Bitcoin rely on SideSwap's independent service route, which has been operational since October with a standard fee. Because direct Federation peg-outs are paused, every customer payout relies on the provider's own Bitcoin wallet inventory, which is replenished in bulk batches.

Restored 1:1 backing does not guarantee immediate payout capacity for every conversion request.

Understanding the Liquid Bitcoin Network Status

When SideSwap's internal wallet runs low, customer conversion orders are placed in a queue and processed in arrival order following the next inventory refill. The provider cannot guarantee exact completion times for these pending transactions. Although the reserve balance equals the circulating tokens, the speed of customer payouts remains bound by the conditional state of manually managed wallet refills rather than automated network mechanisms.

Meanwhile, the Liquid Federation's plan outlines that restoring full one-to-one backing must precede the controlled reactivation of peg-outs for authorized holders holding specific keys known as PAK keys. The timeline for this resumption depends on meeting ongoing security and operational criteria, and SideSwap has stated it does not currently know when Federation-level withdrawals will officially restart.

Why it matters

The alignment of reserve and circulation figures marks a key operational milestone for the ecosystem following earlier software vulnerabilities. However, the continued reliance on manual wallet replenishment highlights the distinction between token-level reserve backing and immediate liquidity availability for everyday users navigating conversion services during this transition period.
