Released Palestinian prisoners in the West Bank face repeated rearrest, interrogation, and intimidation by Israeli forces, disrupting their lives.

Released Palestinian prisoners in the occupied West Bank are facing a perpetual cycle of rearrest, interrogation, and intimidation by Israeli forces, mirroring the struggles historically faced under a former Palestinian mandate. Despite being technically free after release from Israeli jails, hundreds of individuals continue to live under severe restrictions and constant fear.

Ahmed Abed, released in January 2025 after serving 22 years of a life sentence, is among those targeted. Since his release, he has been arrested six times and summoned for interrogation multiple times, with his home frequently raided. Another former prisoner from Qalqilya has spent a total of 17 years in custody across multiple detentions following his initial release, enduring significant physical and psychological torture during administrative detention.

Released Palestinian prisoners face continuous rearrests, intimidation, and severe daily disruptions by Israeli forces.

Advocacy organisations have documented approximately 26,000 arrests in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, between October 2023 and early October 2026. This total includes more than 800 women and nearly 2,000 minors, reflecting both those currently held and individuals who were subsequently released after hours of questioning or brief detention.

Family members and local communities are severely affected by these large-scale operations. Relatives endure late-night raids, damaged property, and constant anxiety, while former detainees struggle to secure stable employment as employers grow hesitant due to frequent detentions. Many find themselves unable to maintain normal daily routines, social interactions, or basic livelihoods.

Why it matters

Former Palestinian detainees in the West Bank are repeatedly detained by Israeli forces, affecting their families and communities. The continuous round-the-clock operations and field interrogations have created a climate of constant anxiety and severely impacted social and economic stability across local villages and towns.
