Pope Leo XIV has arrived in Argentina for his first papal visit since 1987, setting up a potential clash with President Javier Milei.

Preparations are underway across Argentina as the country prepares for a major papal trip, with a focus on Pope Leo XIV visiting the region. This journey marks the first papal visit to the country since John Paul II traveled there in 1987, while his predecessor, Pope Francis, never returned during his papacy. The multi-country tour began in Uruguay on Friday and will conclude in Peru.

On Monday, the pope's first full day in Argentina will include a stop at the Cottolengo Don Orione, a Catholic-run home for disabled people located in Claypole, about 26km from Buenos Aires. The facility currently cares for about 400 residents with disabilities. However, the visit arrives amid tensions following wide-ranging funding cuts implemented by President Javier Milei.

Facility coordinator Fernando Montero noted that the government halted supplies of medications, special foods, and diapers last November, leaving the matter in court. Montero described the pope and the president as having completely opposing ideologies. While the pope teaches that a person's worth is not measured by productivity, Milei is a hyper-capitalist who maintains that those who compete the most deserve rewards.

Pope Leo XIV's visit to Argentina highlights stark ideological divisions with President Javier Milei.

Tensions over AI and social policy

Beyond social funding disputes, the pope and the president hold divergent views on technology. In May, Pope Leo called for disarming artificial intelligence, whereas Milei has stated he will not regulate AI and has proposed legislation to build datacentres and grant legal status to non-human corporations. Meanwhile, ministers have reportedly used AI to draft domestic legislation.

During his three-day stay, the pope is scheduled to meet business and union leaders in Buenos Aires and celebrate Mass in Cรณrdoba. The itinerary has sparked discussions among political and religious analysts regarding how the pope's messages on social justice, labour, and human dignity will resonate against the background of the administration's severe public spending cuts and economic reforms.

Why it matters

The papal visit brings international attention to Argentina's deep economic and social divisions, affecting vulnerable populations such as retirees and disabled individuals who face mounting financial pressures under the current government. The interaction between the head of the Catholic Church and a far-right libertarian administration underscores ongoing debates over public spending, welfare, and the social doctrine of the church.
