Following recent israel election results, President Isaac Herzog must select a candidate to build a new government amid parliamentary deadlock.
Following the recent israel election results, the political landscape in Israel remains uncertain after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lost his coalition's parliamentary majority. Neither Netanyahu nor the opposing bloc of Jewish parties secured the necessary sixty-one seats needed for a majority in the one-hundred-and-twenty-seat Knesset. Parties will now need to realign or bridge gaps across traditional divides to establish a new administration.
Official certification of the election outcome is scheduled to be delivered to President Isaac Herzog. Herzog is required to choose an incoming Knesset member to lead coalition efforts, with consultations involving party leaders guiding his decision. The chosen representative will have twenty-eight days to finalize a coalition, with a potential fourteen-day extension if necessary.
Potential choices for the role include Netanyahu and former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, whose Yashar party led the opposition bloc. Reports indicate Eisenkot might secure backing from Arab-led lawmakers seeking to unseat the current prime minister. Meanwhile, President Herzog has advocated for creative compromises to prevent another cycle of voting.
President Herzog must task a candidate with government formation by November 11.
Different pathways remain open if initial efforts falter, including minority administrations supported externally or power-sharing agreements featuring rotating leadership. Should all attempts fail, the Knesset will face dissolution, sending voters back to the polls. Netanyahu continues to serve in a caretaker capacity until a successor takes office.
The protracted political uncertainty affects governance stability in Israel and determines leadership paths following inconclusive legislative voting. The ongoing negotiations dictate whether a stable coalition can emerge or if another round of elections will be triggered.
