Israeli forces have closed the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron to Palestinian worshippers as thousands of settlers arrive for a Jewish holiday.

Israeli security forces restricted access to the Ibrahimi Mosque in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, barring Palestinian worshippers and employees from entering the site. The closure went into effect on Friday afternoon and is scheduled to remain in force until late Saturday evening, coinciding with an annual Jewish holiday commemorating Sarah, a wife of the Prophet Abraham.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Religious Endowments, the call to prayer was suspended during the lockdown. Mosque director Moataz Abu Sneineh stated that authorities intended to open all prayer halls and courtyards exclusively to Jewish visitors. Troops tightened checkpoints and restricted movement across the Old City, preventing local residents from entering or leaving their homes.

Israel Hebron News and Restrictions

Security personnel anticipated roughly 20,000 visitors to arrive for the celebration, deploying hundreds of troops to manage the crowds. The shrine, known to Jews as the Cave of the Patriarchs, is deeply revered by both Muslims and Jews as the traditional burial place of Abraham and his family.

Under the 1997 Hebron Agreement, Israel maintained security control over the Old City while local Palestinian authorities held administrative powers. However, recent administrative shifts by Israeli officials have raised local concerns regarding long-term control of the site. The religious closure follows a recent ten-day military siege in Hebron that involved multiple arrests, home demolitions, and the displacement of numerous residents as settlers continue to expand their presence in the area under military protection.

Why it matters

The restricted access to a shared holy site highlights ongoing tensions over administrative control and religious freedom in the West Bank. These developments directly impact local residents' daily movement and deepen friction between communities regarding the governance of culturally significant locations.
