Torrential rains linked to a super El Niรฑo season have destroyed a famous rock spire in north-west New Mexico, leaving local communities dealing with extensive flood aftermath.
A renowned rock formation in north-west New Mexico has been found in pieces following a severe spell of torrential rainstorms connected to the super El Niรฑo season. The undulating, gravity-defying formations of the region represent some of the most famous mexico landmarks found across the American south-west, drawing visitors and photographers from all over.
Kialo Winters, founder of Navajo Tours USA and a local guide of 13 years, discovered the destruction on October 30 while leading a tour along the Valley of Dreams trail near the Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness. The well-known spire, called the Alien Throne and featured heavily on local tourism websites, was found shattered. Winters noted that heavy rains were likely to blame for the collapse of the hoodoo.

Communities in the Four Corners area had faced intense rainstorms and severe flooding just a week prior, resulting in mandatory evacuations and numerous water rescues. In Farmington, the closest town to the Valley of Dreams, residents sought refuge on rooftops as floodwaters inundated their homes. Winters explained that these majestic geological features serve as traditional waypoints in Indigenous history, guiding local people across the landscape for generations.
Another prominent formation nearby, known as the King of Wings, also sustained damage recently, though hiking website posts indicate it may have broken before the heaviest rains struck. Winters emphasized that while these losses are heavy, the landscape is naturally dynamic and subject to ongoing erosion. Both the Navajo Nation and the Bureau of Land Management plan to inspect the site to officially determine the cause of the destruction.
Why it matters
The damage highlights how extreme weather events driven by climate shifts can impact vulnerable natural wonders and sacred Indigenous waypoints. The destruction affects local tourism, regional heritage, and communities still recovering from severe flooding across the American south-west.
