Israel's central elections head stated that official outcomes will remain valid even if allegations of foreign interference are proven correct.
The leader of the Israeli elections commission announced that the final outcome of the country's general election will not be overturned, regardless of whether allegations regarding foreign interference are proven true. Noam Sohlberg, heading the Central Elections Committee, delivered this message via a video broadcast alongside the attorney general and the director of the internal security agency, the Shin Bet.
This announcement follows challenges raised by the Likud party led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Without presenting documentation, the party asserted that Arab-led factions had manipulated the ballot and secured financial backing from Qatar to achieve notable gains during Tuesday's vote. Qatar firmly dismissed these accusations, characterizing them as a deliberate disinformation campaign.
Simultaneously, law enforcement officials released two out of three political activists who had been detained prior to the opening of polling stations. According to police reports, these individuals were intercepted carrying cash intended for voter bribery. One suspect received an order for house arrest while another was freed under unspecified terms. Authorities noted these detainees were linked to the Ra'am faction, which secured eight seats in the legislature.
Mansour Abbas, leader of the Ra'am faction, strongly condemned the detentions, describing them as politically motivated measures designed to manipulate the electoral outcome. Meanwhile, opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot publicly accused the prime minister of orchestrating a systematic effort to undermine the credibility of the certified tallies.
The recent vote left the 120-seat parliament deadlocked, with the incumbent leader's bloc securing 53 seats and the opposition coalition capturing 48 seats. Because neither faction holds enough seats to govern independently, attention has turned to the record 19 seats won by three Arab-led factions. While an alliance between the opposition and Arab parties could theoretically produce a comfortable majority, forming such a coalition remains politically contentious within the country.
As the formal certification of the ballot counts approaches, President Isaac Herzog is tasked with selecting a political figure to attempt government formation.
Official electoral outcomes will remain unchanged despite allegations of external interference.
Why it matters
The declaration by the election authority ensures political stability by preventing external controversies from invalidating the democratic process. Official certification of the final counts this week will determine the next steps for political leadership, directly affecting coalition negotiations and future governance in the region.
