The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning across parts of the UK as current conditions create a recipe for thick fog that may disrupt travel.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning across several regions as atmospheric conditions create what meteorologists describe as a perfect recipe for dense fog. The advisory remains in effect from Sunday evening until Monday morning, with transport authorities anticipating potential disruptions to various travel services throughout the affected zones.

Affected locations under the weather alert encompass the entirety of the Midlands and large parts of southern England, excluding the south-west. Additional pockets in northern England and Wales are also included in the warning, with potential fog formations expected in cities such as Liverpool, Sheffield, York, Cardiff, and Wrexham. Operational meteorologists note that patchy fog may additionally develop in other parts of the nation, including Northern Ireland and the central belt of Scotland.

Niamh Murray, a Met Office operational meteorologist, explained that the seasonal transition into autumn and winter brings longer nights that allow temperatures to drop significantly. This prolonged cooling period brings ambient air temperatures closer to saturation levels required for fog creation. According to the forecaster, light winds and clear skies are key components of the current weather setup, enabling dense fog to accumulate and potentially persist if temperatures drop below freezing.

Dense fog and low visibility across parts of the UK may cause travel delays until Monday morning.

Additional impacts from the weather event could involve reduced visibility dropping below 50 metres in certain areas, increasing the likelihood of delays for bus and train networks. Aviation services might also experience schedule adjustments or flight cancellations due to heavy fog concentrations.

Why it matters

The predicted weather pattern carries potential consequences for transport networks and agricultural regions. Travellers across the Midlands and southern England should prepare for possible delays and reduced visibility until the warning lifts on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, subsequent rainfall following the fog could provide moisture to areas in the south-west that have experienced prolonged droughts governed by the Environment Agency, with potential rainfall accumulations reaching up to 70mm.
