Investigation Underway
Aerial footage captured following the accident showed the wreckage of the helicopter submerged upside down in the water, with its yellow emergency floats still attached to the structure. The National Transportation Safety Board announced that it has launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash, while inquiries have also been directed to the Federal Aviation Administration.
This incident follows another major aviation accident in Florida that occurred just days earlier. Over the weekend, a business jet carrying nine people crashed in Greenacres within Palm Beach county, resulting in fatalities for everyone on board. Crew members in that prior incident had reported encountering icing conditions, turbulence, and heavy precipitation before declaring a Mayday call and experiencing a rapid loss of altitude.
Why it matters
This tragic event highlights ongoing aviation safety concerns following consecutive air disasters in Florida within a span of days. The immediate response by multiple emergency agencies demonstrates the protocols in place for water-based rescue operations in metropolitan coastal areas.
