Fox News faced lower prime-time viewership during a disappointing midterm election for Republicans, trailing several networks.

During a midterm election night that proved very challenging for Republicans, the prominent conservative broadcaster experienced a noticeable drop in audience engagement, according to early preliminary figures. As Democrats secured control of both the United States Senate and House of Representatives, early audience numbers indicated that viewers distanced themselves from the channel amid dissatisfaction with Donald Trump and his political movement.

Data from the Nielsen firm showed that the network attracted an average of 3.882 million total viewers between the hours of 8:00 PM and 11:00 PM in preliminary Fast Nationals ratings. This put the broadcaster behind major broadcast networks such as NBC, which drew 6.519 million viewers, and ABC, which gathered 4.906 million viewers. It also trailed competing cable networks including CNN with 3.927 million viewers and MS Now with 3.922 million viewers. However, the conservative channel did surpass CBS News, which recorded 2.629 million viewers.

Because these metrics are preliminary, data collectors expect the figures to be revised upward when final audience information becomes available. Across the major six television networks, prime-time election coverage averaged 25.784 million total viewers, marking an increase compared to the 22.215 million total viewers recorded during the 2022 midterm elections, when Fox News alone averaged 7.422 million viewers.

Conservative broadcaster trails multiple networks in preliminary election night audience figures.

Industry observers note that the network has faced reduced viewership in recent months amid high public unpopularity for Trump. Total day viewership for the channel dropped 27% last month compared to the same period in the previous year, though it remained ahead of CNN and MS Now. Lachlan Murdoch, chief executive of the parent company Fox Corp, addressed the situation during an earnings call, acknowledging viewer fatigue across the platform.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump voiced criticism of the network throughout the election evening, placing blame on the broadcaster for the losses sustained by his party. In a social media post on Truth Social, the former president targeted the network's October performance figures, attributing the decline to the channel's practice of inviting Democratic candidates for interviews.

Why it matters

This shift in media consumption highlights changing audience habits during major political events and reflects broader discontent among conservative voters following election losses. The data illustrates how political disappointment can directly impact television viewership trends for prominent news networks.
