Ongoing regional conflicts in the Middle East have forced the postponement and cancellation of major football tournaments and Formula 1 races.

Ongoing regional tensions and security concerns in the Middle East have caused significant disruptions across the sporting calendar, affecting major international competitions such as football tournaments and Formula 1 races. The most recent postponement involves the 2027 Asian Cup, which was scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia from 7 January to 5 February next year. Concerns regarding missile attacks by Yemen's Houthi movement prompted tournament organizers to delay the 24-team event by almost a year, rescheduling it to run between 23 December 2027 and 21 January 2028. Following this calendar shift, the Saudi Pro League also called off its full round of matches for the weekend to recalibrate fixtures and achieve a more balanced distribution.

Motorsport has experienced similar disruptions. The ongoing US-Iran conflict previously led to the cancellation of Formula 1 Grand Prix weekends in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia in April. Additional races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi scheduled for the end of the year currently face uncertainty due to regional instability and Houthi-related conflicts. If these events are cancelled, Formula 1 will lose four out of its 24 scheduled races for the year. Although governing bodies have received security reassurances from various governmental sources to proceed with the upcoming races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, internal misgivings remain. Should the situation deteriorate, those races could be called off and potentially replaced with a single event in Imola, Italy, while the upcoming 2027 season openers in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia face potential cancellation if conditions do not change by December.

Beyond cancellations and rescheduling, the regional situation has impacted players and their families. Several star players, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Kingsley Coman, did not travel with Al-Nassr to Uzbekistan due to match pressure and travel volume. Al-Wasl from the United Arab Emirates also chose not to fly to Saudi Arabia for an upcoming fixture, requiring the match to be rearranged. Furthermore, family members of players based in Riyadh, such as the wife of Al-Hilal player Ollie Watkins, decided to return temporarily to the UK with their children until the security situation stabilizes.

Why it matters

The postponement and cancellation of major international sports fixtures highlight how regional security concerns can directly alter global sports calendars. These changes affect athletes, traveling personnel, league schedules, and international motorsport planning across several nations in the region.
