Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah will visit India from November 22 to 24, seeking a financial package and new aviation entry corridors.
Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah is scheduled to travel to India for a three-day official visit from November 22 to 24. This upcoming diplomatic engagement marks his first bilateral trip to a neighboring country since taking office in March 2026, following elections that brought his Rastriya Swatantra Party to power in the wake of Gen Z-led protests. People searching for nepal balen shah will note that his prior travel was limited to attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The visit follows preparatory discussions held during Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri's trip to Kathmandu on November 4 and 5, where officials addressed regional connectivity, trade, and energy cooperation.
During the high-level talks, Kathmandu intends to press for a financial assistance package exceeding $2 billion. This requested sum consists of roughly $1 billion in concessional lines of credit, about $500 million in direct grants, and additional funding dedicated to post-flood infrastructure reconstruction following severe natural disasters in August 2026. Prime Minister Shah previously thanked India for its swift response to those destructive flash floods and expressed hope that the upcoming discussions would yield concrete, result-oriented outcomes for both nations.
Nepal seeks over $2 billion in financial aid and new air-entry routes during upcoming India visit.
Another major priority for Kathmandu is securing additional air-entry corridors through Indian airspace. Currently, most international flights into Nepal enter through a single congested corridor situated over Simara. Nepalese authorities have long advocated for additional entry points near Janakpur, Bhairahawa, and Nepalgunj to improve connectivity with Indian cities and stimulate trade and tourism.
Regional Agenda and Energy Cooperation
In addition to financial assistance and aviation routes, the bilateral agenda is expected to cover energy cooperation, including cross-border electricity trade and hydropower development projects. Discussions will also likely touch upon transit arrangements and outstanding border matters involving areas such as Lipulekh, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura. Furthermore, several India-assisted infrastructure initiatives, including integrated check posts and the Nepal Police Academy at Panauti, may be advanced or formally inaugurated during the trip.
Why it matters
This high-level visit represents a pivotal moment in bilateral relations, marking the first Nepalese prime ministerial trip to India in more than three years since June 2023. Progress on the requested financial package and air-entry routes could substantially impact Nepal's post-flood reconstruction, regional connectivity, and economic growth by easing air traffic congestion and expanding trade ties with India.
