The Nepal Embassy in New Delhi hosted a festive gathering to mark Kukur Tihar, bringing together diplomats, community members, and canines for a unique cultural observance. The celebration at the embassy grounds highlighted the special bond between humans and dogs as part of the broader Tihar festival traditions.
Chargรฉ dโAffaires Dr Surendra Thapa presided over the event, which saw participating dogs adorned with bright marigold flower garlands and marked with red tika on their foreheads. Attendees offered special treats to the animals during the gathering. A photograph captured at the venue showed participants in traditional attire standing alongside several dogs on a white sheet strewn with flower petals beneath an official banner.
Kukur Tihar is celebrated on the second day of the five-day festival of lights, which is also known as Yamapanchak or Deepawali. During this period, dogs are traditionally revered as guardians and messengers linked to Yama, the Hindu god of death, who is believed to be accompanied by canine sentinels at the gates of the underworld.
Across Nepal and within diaspora communities abroad, households observe the day by placing flower garlands around the necks of both pets and strays, applying tika, and offering favoured foods such as rice, meat, eggs, and sweets. The embassy event provided a vital platform for members of the Nepali community in India to maintain their cultural heritage while living away from their homeland.
