More than 90 percent of stocks targeted by the OKXICE tokenization venture face issuer objections, threatening Wall Street integration.

A prominent tokenization venture backed by the New York Stock Exchange parent and a major crypto exchange is encountering significant hurdles as corporate resistance mounts against its plans. OKXICE, formed jointly by OKX and Intercontinental Exchange, initially proposed bringing 63 stock tickers onto a blockchain-based marketplace. However, regulatory filings and public updates show that issuers have objected to a vast majority of those securities, raising questions about the viability of the project and the future of tokenized stock trading.

The pushback began shortly after the venture outlined its plans in early October, with opposition growing rapidly over subsequent weeks. By early November, the count of objecting companies reached 67, encompassing major Wall Street names such as Apple, Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, Tesla, and Meta. Under a regulatory exemption introduced by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, companies whose shares are tokenized by third parties have the right to file formal objections, which prevents venues from offering those specific assets without consent.

Out of the original lineup, only six companies have not registered formal objections. Notably, all remaining optionsโ€”including Strategy, Coinbase, Robinhood, Circle, Securitize, and BitGoโ€”maintain substantial connections to the digital asset sector. Analysts point out that the absence of an objection does not signify an endorsement or guarantee that these tokenized equities will ultimately be available when trading begins.

Issuer rejections threaten the OKXICE tokenization venue as corporate resistance scales rapidly.

Beyond corporate resistance, the venture faces structural challenges regarding capital availability and market depth. The operator and its affiliates will abstain from providing liquidity to the marketplace, requiring independent participants and institutional investors to supply the necessary stablecoins and stock tokens into automated trading pools. Existing data highlights the difficulty of establishing robust decentralized trading depth for tokenized equities, where median pool sizes have historically remained very low.

The initiative aims to allow round-the-clock trading of tokenized versions of equities using stablecoins. Despite these ambitions, the venture has yet to announce a formal launch date or confirm the final roster of available securities as it navigates both regulatory frameworks and issuer opposition.

Why it matters

The widespread corporate objections and liquidity challenges underscore the legal and operational complexities involved in bridging traditional equity markets with decentralized blockchain networks. For investors and market participants, the outcome of this venture will help define the boundaries of third-party tokenization under evolving regulatory frameworks.
