Non-profit cybersecurity organization Security Alliance, known as SEAL, estimates that the North Korea-linked group TraderTraitor gained entry to Binance systems roughly eight weeks prior to the October 29 exploit. According to a report released on Thursday, the unauthorized access began in September, allowing threat actors to navigate the internal infrastructure with a high degree of stealth over a prolonged duration.

The findings were published following a detailed analysis of the multi-stage intrusion patterns. SEAL identified at least four front companies connected to fraudulent recruitment campaigns orchestrated by TraderTraitor in 2026, including citalab.net, citalab.com, bitfit.io, and oddium.io. This binance security incident forms part of a broader trend observed across several high-profile digital asset platforms.

North Korean hackers maintained stealthy access to Binance systems for eight weeks prior to the exploit.

SEAL pointed to similar multi-stage patterns in other major cryptocurrency heists. Analysts estimated that attackers held access for about six weeks ahead of the Bitget breach, six weeks of access involving LayerZero prior to a vulnerability exploited at Kelp DAO, and approximately three weeks before the AFX exploit occurred. Meanwhile, the Federal Bureau of Investigation attributed the broader attack campaign to TraderTraitor, although Kim Yo Jong dismissed the accusations.

Binance traced the origins of the attack back to June when a separate employee device was compromised. Although the exchange detected the breach and replaced the hardware, investigators noted that malicious actors had already harvested details regarding internal teams and wallet infrastructure. Binance attributed the hack to a fake job interview that led to compromised employee credentials. Media outlets attempted to reach Binance for comment regarding the timeline estimates, but no response was received prior to publication. Grayscale representative Pandl suggested the incident might represent a temporary setback for the broader crypto sector.

Why it matters

The revelations surrounding the timeline of the breach highlight ongoing vulnerabilities related to sophisticated social engineering campaigns targeting digital asset infrastructure. By detailing how threat actors maintain prolonged covert access before executing large-scale exploits, the findings underscore the critical need for enhanced employee verification protocols across organizations worldwide.
