A Tanzanian court has sentenced Chadema leader Tundu Lissu to four years in prison for incitement, while dropping a treason charge.

A Tanzanian court has handed down a four-year prison sentence to opposition leader Tundu Lissu after finding him guilty of incitement. The heavily watched ruling took place on Friday in front of a courtroom filled with supporters. During the verdict, the bench dismissed a separate treason charge that previously carried the potential for a death sentence. The presiding judge stated that the accused used his statements to disrupt elections and instigate violence, though the court noted that avenues for an appeal remain open.

Lissu, who leads the primary opposition party Chadema, rejected the ruling as a politically motivated attack. He accused the judicial officers of following directives issued by the government of President Samia Suluhu Hassan. Prior to the verdict, heightened security measures were implemented around the court and across the commercial hub of Dar-es-Salaam as supporters gathered to follow the proceedings. Lissu has already spent nineteen months behind bars following his arrest ahead of last year's presidential election, which resulted in Hassan securing re-election.

The dismissal of the treason charge spares opposition leader Tundu Lissu from the death penalty.

The international community has monitored the developments closely. The legal proceedings against the opposition figure have drawn sharp criticism from lawmakers within the European Union and Britain, who characterized the case as politically motivated and demanded his immediate release.

Why it matters

The dismissal of the treason charge removes the threat of a death sentence for the opposition leader, significantly altering the legal stakes of his ongoing detention. While the four-year prison sentence maintains political friction between the ruling administration and opposition groups in Tanzania, the removal of the capital charge opens a specific pathway for legal appeals through the courts.
