Two of the largest public bitcoin miners reported their third-quarter results on Wednesday, confirming that they have been selling significant portions of the digital asset they were built to accumulate. Riot Platforms and Hut 8 revealed distinct financial strategies involving their bitcoin holdings during recent earnings announcements.
Riot has sold 20,264 bitcoin this year for approximately $1.5 billion, leaving the company with 2,418 BTC valued at about $202 million at the end of the quarter. The sales have provided steady capital for data center construction and the full repayment of a $200 million Coinbase credit facility. This liquidity supported a major agreement where Riot signed a 15-year triple-net lease with an unnamed Frontier AI Lab for its Corsicana, Texas campus, delivering significant critical IT capacity.

Meanwhile, Hut 8 directed its asset sales toward shareholder returns rather than contractors. The company sold thousands of bitcoin, including 954 coins for $74.8 million during the third quarter and about 2,148 BTC for $175.4 million in October, successfully retiring 3.3 million shares for a combined $250 million. Following these transactions, the Hut 8 board raised its share repurchase authorization to $1 billion.
Riot Games and Market Shifts
Mining operations continued in the background as both companies navigated changing market conditions. Riot produced 1,637 BTC during the quarter, though mining revenue declined due to lower average asset prices compared to the previous year. Hut 8 reported net income of $189.5 million, heavily driven by gains on digital assets, while adjusting its business model to focus on data centers and its majority stake in American Bitcoin.
Why it matters
These corporate updates illustrate how prominent cryptocurrency miners are pivoting their operational models toward artificial intelligence infrastructure and direct shareholder returns. By liquidating significant portions of their accumulated digital assets, these firms are securing substantial capital to fund major technology leases and stock buybacks, reshaping their long-term business trajectories.
