The U.S. government has taken decisive action against MEXC Global, initiating measures that effectively remove the crypto exchange from the American financial system. Following a formal directive from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, U.S. financial institutions are now barred from handling any fund transfers connected to the platform. The measure forms a key component of Operation Economic Outcast, a wider federal initiative aimed at curbing sanctions evasion and stopping illicit actors from exploiting digital assets.

Founded in 2018, the digital asset platform handles massive daily trading volumes and holds billions in reserves. According to regulatory findings, the exchange processed a vast sum of money linked to illegal activities over a five-year period. This included millions connected to sanctioned Russian entities, millions routed through stablecoins, and transfers benefiting the central bank of Iran and its military wing. Authorities designated the platform a primary money laundering concern, noting that its internal compliance procedures contained severe deficiencies despite public claims of strict anti-money-laundering controls.

Federal authorities barred U.S. institutions from all transfers with MEXC over illicit finance.

Treasury Cuts and Sanctions Evasion

Federal investigators found that the platform continued transacting with blacklisted Russian entities long after initial designations were issued. The enforcement action leverages a provision of the Combating Russian Money Laundering Act rather than relying on a standard sanctions designation, giving authorities a direct tool to sever digital asset infrastructure operating outside traditional banking channels. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that financial institutions cannot maintain access to the American financial network while supporting foreign regimes that use digital tokens to bypass international restrictions.

Why it matters

This decision effectively cuts off one of the world's largest digital asset platforms from American financial channels, dealing a major blow to cross-border illicit finance networks. The move impacts global crypto liquidity and signals tighter regulatory enforcement against platforms accused of bypassing international sanctions involving Russia, Iran, and North Korea.
