Russian air strikes hit a critical bridge and energy facilities across the Kyiv region overnight, crippling key utilities just days before trilateral peace talks in Abu Dhabi.

In the latest development in the Ukraine Russia war, Russian air attacks struck Kyiv and surrounding districts overnight, damaging transport and power networks ahead of scheduled diplomatic discussions. Ukrainian officials reported that one individual was killed and eight others were injured during the widespread strikes.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russian forces launched 36 ballistic missiles and 172 drones during the overnight assault. Zelenskyy stated that Moscow was attempting to plunge the capital and the nation into a total blackout, while reiterating his calls for stronger defense support from the United States.

Russian overnight strikes battered key infrastructure in Kyiv, threatening severe utility outages ahead of trilateral peace talks.

Russia's Defense Ministry stated that its forces hit the Northern Bridge and the Meridian Plant. Moscow asserted that the bridge served as a transit route for Ukrainian military hardware and weapons, while claiming the facility produces Flamingo cruise missiles. The ministry added that strikes damaged several energy and industrial facilities in the Kyiv region, an electrical substation in the neighboring Zhytomyr region, and a commercial cargo vessel operating in the Black Sea.

Ukraine Russia War Strikes Strain Capital Utilities

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that the Northern Bridge was struck, warning that the capital is experiencing an extremely difficult emergency involving electricity, water, and heating services. The damage arrived as overnight temperatures fell to 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). Kyiv regional Governor Tymur Tkachenko noted that energy sites across three separate districts sustained damage.

The strikes reflect a broader escalation in recent months, during which Russian operations have targeted municipal power supplies, urban centers, and river crossings.

The bombardment took place days before Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington assemble in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, for a fourth round of trilateral peace talks. Earlier discussions mediated by the United States concluded without breakthroughs due to ongoing disputes over security terms and territorial control. On Friday, US President Donald Trump commented that the war could be nearing a resolution, adding that he envisions a comprehensive agreement encompassing all of Europe. In southern Ukraine, a separate six-day local ceasefire in the occupied city of Oleshky recently permitted the evacuation of approximately 800 residents.

Why it matters

The strikes leave residents in the Ukrainian capital facing severe heating and electricity disruptions during freezing weather, directly testing civilian resilience. By targeting strategic crossings and power grids immediately prior to the Abu Dhabi conference, the attacks signal intense pressure on negotiators as contentious territorial and security debates resume.
