US midterm elections: Why it is important and races to watch

American citizens head to the polls for the midterm elections to determine the makeup of the US Congress and judge the sitting president's term.

On November 3, United States citizens will cast their ballots in the midterm elections. While these contests do not determine who occupies the White House, Americans will choose their representatives in the Capitol. Midterm elections occur every four years at the halfway point of a presidential term, allowing voters to decide who represents them in the House of Representatives and the Senate, alongside gubernatorial races in several states.

J. Miles Coleman, an election analyst at the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, noted that midterms serve as a referendum on the president and the ruling party. If the populace is content, the governing party generally performs better, though President Donald Trump faces record-low approval ratings.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are contested, with members serving two-year terms. Meanwhile, about a third of the 100 Senate seats are up for election this year, with senators serving six-year terms. Additionally, voters across 36 states will elect governors who shape local laws on education, abortion, and electoral procedures.

Republicans currently hold slim majorities in both chambers of Congress. However, observers suggest Democrats are well positioned to seize the House of Representatives, needing only four additional seats to gain control. In the Senate, where Republicans currently hold 53 seats to the Democrats' 45 alongside two independents, a 50:50 deadlock would be broken by Vice President JD Vance.

Midterm elections will decisively influence American politics for the next few years.

Specific races draw intense focus, including tight senatorial contests in Texas where Democrat James Talarico is polling level with Republican rival Ken Paxton. Gubernatorial races in states like Minnesota and Georgia also feature historic milestones, as Black women vie for state leadership positions.

Why it matters

These midterm elections will decisively influence United States politics for the years ahead. Because federal policy decisions require congressional approval, the results will determine how easily President Trump can implement his domestic and foreign agenda.
