A study of 121 stocks found that weekend token trading does not provide a clear directional edge for the next market open.

Investors often look for signals to anticipate market movements, but a recent analysis suggests that weekend stock tokens may not be the reliable indicator some expect for a weekend monday transition. A study conducted by blockchain data provider Bitquery examined 121 stocks across 17 weekends between July 10 and October 30 to determine if token prices could forecast equity market openings. The findings indicate that weekend trading activity does not offer a consistent advantage for predicting the next opening price.

Weekend stock tokens do not reliably predict Monday market openings compared to simple market trends.

Analyzing the weekend monday data

The research tracked 791 stock-opening observations, focusing on instances where the price moved at least 0.5% from the previous Friday's close. Bitquery found that token movements correctly identified the direction of 54% of qualifying openings. However, this result was largely overshadowed by the fact that simply predicting every stock would open higher resulted in a 55% success rate. Because more stocks rose than fell during the study period, a basic coin-toss benchmark would have been equally effective.

When using balanced accuracy, which accounts for both rises and falls, the tokens scored 53%. Furthermore, the study noted that the median error for predictions using token moves was 1.2%, compared to 0.9% when assuming the stock would open at the previous Friday's closing price. Bitquery emphasized that while weekend trading provides investors with additional hours to transact, these hours do not necessarily translate into superior forecasting information.

The study also noted that different methodologies, such as changing the observation time or volume thresholds, can alter results. A separate check using prices just before 8 p.m. ET yielded 59% balanced accuracy, but this test involved different volume filters and movement parameters. Bitquery cautioned that the current research is vendor-based and lacks independent raw-data replication or cost-adjusted strategy testing.

Why it matters

The research highlights that the availability of weekend trading does not equate to a demonstrated forecasting advantage. As Nasdaq prepares for a potential transition to 23-hour, five-day trading, the gap between conventional market hours and token-based trading may narrow for some investors. This development affects market participants who use these tools to gauge sentiment, suggesting that weekend price data should be evaluated carefully rather than assumed to be a predictive signal for the start of the week.
