Anthropic launched a personal finance capability for its Claude assistant on Thursday, allowing users within the United States to link their bank accounts and query the chatbot regarding spending habits, upcoming bills, and remaining balances. However, the rollout arrived alongside a strong accusation from crypto investor Anthony Pompliano, who claimed that Anthropic sought confidential details from his competing startup, Silvia, months prior to the release.

The new functionality enables Claude to summarize expenditures, detect duplicate transactions, flag unexpected fees, clarify interest charges, and generate charts or bill calendars. In demonstrations provided by Anthropic, users can inquire about monthly spending patterns and check available funds ahead of upcoming paydays.

Anthropic launched a personal finance tool for Claude, prompting accusations of copying from startup Silvia.

Anthropic emphasized on social media that access remains strictly read-only, meaning the chatbot cannot transfer, manage, or invest funds. Furthermore, the company stated that the personal finance feature contains no advertisements or sponsored recommendations, mirroring the broader platform. The system processes account balances, credit limits, account types, truncated account numbers, and transaction histories spanning up to two years from approved accounts.

Understanding Claude AI Finance Expansion

Documentation released by Anthropic notes that conversations occurring within the personal finance section are excluded from model training, though users are advised to verify AI-calculated figures against official bank records due to potential reporting lags. Meanwhile, transparency regarding how user financial information is handled beyond model training remains limited, drawing attention from data-focused observers.

Pompliano, whose Silvia project positions itself as an AI chief financial officer, voiced his grievances in a lengthy online post following the announcement. He alleged that representatives from Anthropic contacted Silvia engineers starting in April under the guise of evaluating growth and computing requirements. According to his claims, the discussions involved an engineered dinner where Anthropic personnel allegedly stated the meal was covered by CEO Dario Amodei.

Why it matters

This development highlights the intensifying competition among general-purpose chatbot creators to integrate practical financial tools directly into consumer software. While OpenAI introduced similar bank connectivity features earlier in the year using Plaid, the dispute between Anthropic and competing startups underscores growing tensions surrounding proprietary product development in the artificial intelligence sector.
