A Mexican judge has been arrested in Colombia after allegedly accepting $2m to release a drug trafficking suspect linked to former Olympian Ryan Wedding.
US authorities have leveled serious allegations against a Mexican judge, claiming he accepted a $2 million bribe to facilitate the release of a suspected drug trafficker. As the US accuses Mexican governor and judicial officials of corruption, this case highlights the complexities of international legal cooperation. Luis Benรญtez Alcรกntara, 49, was arrested in Colombia on Sunday and now faces a nine-count indictment in the United States for his alleged role as an accessory after the fact.
The Role of the Mexican Judge
In 2024, Benรญtez was responsible for overseeing extradition proceedings in Mexico for Andrew Clark, a Canadian citizen. Clark was wanted in the United States for his alleged participation in a billion-dollar drug-trafficking organization purportedly led by former Canadian Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding. According to a statement from the US Department of Justice, Benรญtez accepted the bribe payments and subsequently released Clark from custody.
Following his release, Clark was apprehended again just days later and successfully extradited to the United States. He is currently facing serious charges related to murder and drug trafficking. US officials have confirmed they intend to request the formal extradition of Benรญtez from Colombia to face trial in American courts. It remains unclear if the former judge has secured legal representation at this stage.

A Wider Investigation
This arrest represents a significant development in a broader, long-running investigation into a multinational drug-trafficking network allegedly directed by Ryan Wedding. Wedding, who has since become a high-priority fugitive for the FBI, is accused of orchestrating the movement of cocaine from Latin America into the United States and ordering several homicides. Earlier this year, Wedding was arrested in Mexico and transported to California, where he has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges brought against him.
Law enforcement agencies have conducted an extensive operation resulting in the arrests of dozens of individuals connected to the network. Authorities have seized significant quantities of weapons, illicit drugs, and cash, alongside high-value assets including luxury vehicles, motorcycles, jewelry, and artwork. Matthew Lombard, the attorney representing Clark, did not immediately provide a response to inquiries regarding the latest developments in the case.
Why it matters
The arrest of a sitting judge for allegedly undermining extradition processes highlights the ongoing challenges in international efforts to dismantle large-scale drug-trafficking networks. It sends a clear signal that US authorities are willing to pursue legal action against public officials across borders who are accused of facilitating criminal operations that impact national security.
