The Australian government recently decided to remove the fifty percent capital gains tax discount for investments, shocking digital asset owners across the nation. Starting from July 1, 2027, asset holders will pay their full income tax rate on capital gains rather than the preferential rate that has been in place since 1999. This change means taxable portions will double, with the only relief being a minor adjustment for inflation.
Industry experts note that indexation largely benefits slow-moving assets rather than fast-growing ones like cryptocurrency. According to Swyftx CEO Andrea Yuen, the indexation discount offers little help for digital assets. For instance, a Bitcoin bought at ten thousand dollars and sold a decade later for one hundred thousand dollars would see a very small inflation deduction, resulting in a much larger taxable gain under the new scheme compared to the old rules.
Some high-profile figures are relocating to international jurisdictions with zero percent capital gains tax, while others are exploring local restructuring methods. Options include establishing a self-managed super fund or setting up a corporate entity to trade at the company tax rate. Ben Simpson of Collective Shift points out that accumulating Bitcoin through an SMSF can be a solid strategy for older, wealthier investors, though compliance costs, paperwork, and age restrictions present notable hurdles for younger participants. Meanwhile, political opposition parties have pledged to reverse the legislation if elected.

Why it matters
This shift affects how individuals manage their digital asset portfolios and plan for retirement. With tax rates rising significantly depending on individual income brackets, crypto holders must evaluate restructuring strategies well ahead of the implementation date.
