The bitcoin price experienced significant volatility as digital asset markets digested the outcome of the midterm elections. Data from TradingView indicated that the cryptocurrency slipped into negative territory during Tuesday's daily close as results showed Democrats securing control of both the House and Senate. The trading pair tumbled to a low of $75,618 on Bitstamp, a price point not witnessed since September 16, before mounting a recovery that pushed it as high as $78,039 within three hours.
Market data from CoinGlass demonstrated that the downward movement triggered the liquidation of late long positions situated beneath the $76,000 threshold. Simultaneously, a concentration of asks prevented further upward momentum beyond $78,000. Across the broader market, total crypto long liquidations over a 24-hour window reached $288 million.
Kelly Ye, head of research at institutional digital asset trading platform Talos, noted that the financial landscape had largely anticipated the electoral outcome. According to Talos research, bitcoin moved roughly 1.7 percent following the conclusion of voting, which closely mirrored the 1.8 percent movement previously priced in by options.
US stock futures registered comparable reactions, initially dropping before recovering partial ground. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures both traded approximately 0.3 percent lower at the time of reporting. Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise Financial, pointed to questions surrounding artificial intelligence capital expenditure and data center construction as potential catalysts for the adverse market sentiment following Democratic victories.
Bitcoin dropped to a seven-week low of $75,618 as 24-hour crypto long liquidations approached $300 million.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump adopted a conciliatory posture in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, expressing optimism about collaborating with Democratic lawmakers. On the technical side, the downturn brought bitcoin down to its 50-week simple moving average. Keith Alan, co-founder of Material Indicators, highlighted this moving average as a critical threshold for market participants, noting that failing to hold the line could invite deeper corrections. Similarly, crypto analyst Rekt Capital observed that persistent lower highs on three-day charts might steer prices back toward the $75,500 zone over time.
Why it matters The recent market movements reflect how broader political shifts and legislative control can trigger immediate reactions across digital assets and traditional equities alike. While institutional observers noted that the electoral outcome was largely factored into options pricing, liquidations near the $76,000 mark underscore the sensitivity of leveraged positions to macroeconomic and political developments.
